Where will my bodywork session take place?

Your session will be at my office, which is a private room, inside Summerlin Body Therapeutics, at the Parkway Medical Building near Summerlin Parkway and Buffalo.  Behind the WinCo foods store, turn onto Longford Medical Drive.  You can park in the parking lot or the parking garage.  Take the elevator to the second floor and find Suite 210, Summerlin Body Therapeutics.  If you park in the parking garage, the 3rd floor has a bridge that lands you on the 2nd floor and your car will get a break from the sun.

Do you have an elevator?

Yes!  You can get to me if you’re in a wheelchair!  There are two elevators.  One inside the building, and one in the parking garage.  There are handicap parking spaces near the door in the parking lot.   You can also park in the parking garage and there’s an elevator that will take you to the bridge on floor 3, the bridge walks you across to floor 2 inside the building, very near my office 210.  The bathrooms are near the elevators indoors.

What should I wear?

During your treatment you will be wearing comfortable clothing, either a 2 piece bathing suit, athletic shorts or sport bra and shorts.  You will keep your private areas covered with clothing, but it is important for me to be able to work directly on your skin.  You also should shower before your session and do not apply any lotion, cream or oil to your skin.  This work is the most effective when the skin is dry.  We usually begin with a standing postural alignment analysis to determine how to begin the session and you are not usually covered with a sheet while on the table.

How long should I plan for?

Your 75-minute appointment includes 60 minutes of MFR treatment plus 15 minutes outside of this to discuss your goals, how you are feeling, answer questions, etc. You don’t have to worry that time spent talking is cutting into your treatment, or if you are a minute or two late.  But, please arrive in enough time to use the restroom if needed and be in the waiting area by your appointment time.

What parts of my body will be worked on?

When receiving MFR, time will not allow for a 'full body session', that some are accustomed to with a massage.  However, because everything is connected with the fascial system, your entire body is affected and it is possible to have releases happen in areas that did not receive direct work during the treatment.  We begin with assessment of your alignment while standing, and begin addressing the areas that appear restricted or pulled out of alignment.  Please feel free to let me know any areas you'd like to focus on.

What will the session feel like?

Each person might have a different experience.  In each session, I combine various techniques such as gentle compression, stretching, rocking movement, neuromuscular re-education, application of pressure to specific points, and more, based on what, I find, your body needs.  We can discuss which methods may be most appropriate for you.  For some people, it is very gentle and they don't notice much happening.  Others, feel a lot of sensations internally.  It is important to quiet your mind and tune in, for the best experience.  Please read the page that describes MFR therapy.

What should I do during the session?

During your session, please feel free to ask any questions you have.  You are always in control so, please speak up if something is too intense.

This is not the sort of therapy where you should "check out".  It is important to stay present and tuned in to your body and its sensations or messages.  This work is most effective when you quiet your "thinking mind" and allow yourself to feel.  Let messages come from the wisdom of your body.  If you have any questions regarding the session or about the particular technique you are receiving, feel free to ask.

How can I make my session more effective?

During the session just do your best to bring your awareness inside your body, and notice what you feel.  You can update me, telling me what it feels like and where you feel it.  Sometimes you will feel something in an area far from where my hands are, which might want treatment, too.  Always tell me to “ease up or stop” if something feels too intense.

If you have emotions or memories come up, let yourself experience them to release them – you can choose to share them or keep them to yourself and either is fine.  Allowing them to come up is part of the healing process.  This is what you are here for.

How often should I come in?

Weekly treatments are the most effective to help you meet your goals. You can also schedule appointments twice a week if you would like to reach your goals faster!  It's helpful to correct the dysfunction with close together appointments so your system remembers how you want to be.  Once we get to your main goal, then you can usually spread out to monthly maintenance, to keep from falling back to the original issue.

Do you take insurance?

No, I do not accept insurance.  I work by myself and don’t have the staff or the time it would take to do all the paperwork.

However, I can provide a receipt and documentation of services provided if you would like to seek reimbursement from your insurance company.

I do accept HSA and FSA cards if you have one of those.

What if I feel worse after?

After most sessions you’ll feel improvement. Sometimes you feel improvement right away but sometimes it takes a day or two for relief.

Occasionally, you may feel worse after a treatment. This is not a cause for alarm and doesn’t mean that anything has gone wrong! These flare ups of new or old discomfort might be the body releasing a deeper level of restriction and healing; it might be that we got to a “cause” of your pain as opposed to the “symptoms” that we had been previously treating.

I encourage you to celebrate this progress, let yourself feel what’s going on, and tell me about it at your next session – this is very important to your healing and I am here to help!

This is often called a “healing crisis” in MFR articles and books. I’ve experienced several myself as an MFR client; and even though they may have been intense, they all led to great improvements in my own healing from previous injuries and repetitive stress issues.

During the session my arm moved all by itself.  What was that?

During MFR treatments, you might experience something called “unwinding.” This is when your body might move involuntarily – for instance, your fingers wiggle or your foot/leg twitches, but you didn’t intentionally make them move. This spontaneous movement is your body’s fascial system self-correcting, and is very helpful to the healing process. We encourage you to let this process happen if it does – not to shut it down. Unwinding can take many forms, although you can’t “make” it happen.  It’s also completely fine if you don’t have an unwinding, you are still healing inside.

Are there any medical conditions that would make Myofascial Release inadvisable?

Yes. That's why it's imperative that you fill out the intake form provided by the practitioner.  It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any conditions, health problems or medications you are taking, as well as any recent injuries or surgeries.  If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for bodywork prior to any session. Depending on the condition, approval from your doctor may be required.

How many sessions will I need?

How long have you honestly had chronic pain, and what are your real treatment goals?  Things are not usually “fixed” in one session or even in a few sessions.  If you’ve had chronic pain for a long time, is it realistic to think you’ll be better in a session or two?  Your SYMPTOMS can certainly start to feel better quickly, but if you really want to find and release the CAUSE of your pain, that is an investment in yourself.

The power of myofascial release is that we can go beyond symptoms to find and release the cause of your pain – and that is the goal I hold for you.  The body has its own timeline for healing.  Our job is to keep showing up for the process and listen to what your body has to say. If you trust the process, myofascial release can change your life.

I'm thinking of buying a package but haven't tried MFR.  Can I come to one and then decide?

Yes! When you schedule your appointment, choose “Request appointment.”  You’ll still provide a credit card to complete the reservation, but your card won’t be charged at this time.  At the end of your first treatment, you can decide whether to purchase a package or pay for the one treatment.
